The Welshman secures UKFC amateur lightweight belt with first round stoppage.

Williams was in ruthless form when he defeated Brandon Elwell of Doncaster to win the UKFC amateur lightweight belt on a 23-bout show at the Guild Hall in Preston.

The pair met in a contest scheduled for five three-minute rounds with ISKA champion Elwell expected to give the Welshman a hard night. However, Williams won via submission at 1:30 of the first round. It was his 10th victory in 20 bouts, having been a Mixed Martial Arts competitor for four years.

The Pwllheli man explained how he won the fight: “The fight went ahead with my dominating the striking standing. I took my opponent to the floor via a double leg takedown.

“Here I landed strikes which in turn forced him to give up his back which resulted in me submitting him via a rear naked choke.”
Williams represents one of the biggest fight teams in the UK named HAMMA, which is based in St Helens, Merseyside.
He is coached there by Sean Martin, while his MMA coach is Andy DeVent.

After his title win, Williams said the next plan is to defend his belt in June before looking to make an impact on the international stage.
In the cage, Williams is a relentless fighting machine, but away from the action he is as humble as they come.

In the post-fight interview following his title win, the Pwllheli man stressed how highly he rates his coaching team and appreciates the support he receives.

While having his feet firmly on the ground, he also possesses a quiet determination to be the best and judging by his flawless performance against Elwell there is a lot more success to come for this down-to-earth lad from the Llyn.

US style restaurant chain reveals plans to come to Pwllheli

Harvey’s New York Bar and Grill, currently owns a restaurant in Llandudno, and drive-thru locations in Rhuddlan and Bangor.
Now the chain has announced plans to come to Pwllheli.
They will open at the old Conservative Club building on the Maes.

Director Craig Holmes said: “We have bought the former Conservative club in Pwllheli. We will be speaking to planners now about some cosmetic changes to the site with the hope to get work underway before Christmas.
Anglesey restaurant boss now wants to open a bar at former bank
“This will be a restaurant site like Llandudno rather than a drive-thru. The chain is doing well at its current locations and we think this will work in Pwllheli.
“We will create between 20 to 30 full time jobs when we open.
“This is part of our plan to keep expanding the chain in North Wales.”
Harvey’s opened its first drive-thru in Rhuddlan in December 2014 and followed this with a unit in the university city of Bangor in March 2016.
The restaurants each employ around 30 staff.
Director Craig Holmes has said his ambition was to create drive-thru burger sites that were more upmarket than national chains like McDonald’s.

Pwllheli laundry company gets £15,000 for refurbishment

A PWLLHELI property management company has carried out a £15,000 refurbishment of its laundry unit – with help from a small business fund.

Launched in 2012, the Wales Micro Business Loan Fund managed by Finance Wales has invested over £10m in 390 start-ups and established businesses over the last five years; safeguarding or creating some 2,000 jobs across Wales. The fund has increased from £6m to £18m during that time.

Those to benefit include Pwllheli-based Peninsula Property Management who have expanded their laundry service offering for holiday-home owners and B&B businesses.

The company used the loan to refurbish its laundry unit, Twankey’s Laundry.
Managing director and company founder Susan Kelly was introduced to Finance Wales by the Federation of Small Businesses (FSB).

“The FSB suggested I approach Finance Wales for investment. I was amazed by the speed at which they were able to help. From first calling them it took only 16 days for the money to reach my account. This investment means we can meet our clients’ demand sooner than we planned and has significantly supported our expansion.”

Based in their North Wales office, Finance Wales Investment Executive Heather Abrahams, said: “Sue has a great business set-up. Since founding the company seven years ago she’s grown the business consistently and increased profits year-on-year. We’re happy to support her plans to expand the business and diversify into complementary markets.”

Ceremony to name lifeboat in memory of former coxswain

PWLLHELI RNLI will name its new lifeboat in memory of a former coxswain this weekend – after raising £48,000 to fund it.

Pwllheli RNLI volunteers will hold a special ceremony on Saturday to officially name the station’s new D-class lifeboat in memory of former coxswain Robert ‘Bob’ Wright and welcome the lifeboat into the RNLI fleet.

The D-class lifeboat will be formally named Robert J Wright in memory of the station’s former coxswain who died at sea during a lifeboat service in 2015.

Pwllheli RNLI was given the challenge of raising £24,000 to help fund the new lifeboat as part of a community appeal.

As the volunteers were eager to mark Robert’s memory, the target was smashed in a matter of weeks and the station decided to continue the good work and fund the whole amount.

The naming and service of dedication is always a special day for every lifeboat community as the new lifeboat is officially accepted and welcomed into the charity’s lifesaving fleet.

The honour of formally naming the D-class lifeboat will be given to Pwllheli resident Mary Jones who has spent a lifetime supporting her local lifeboat station.

Ambulance named in John’s memory

An ambulance vehicle is to be named in honour of a staff member who tragically died aged just 54 following a collision between two ambulances.

The Welsh Ambulance Service has paid a moving tribute to one of its colleagues, father-of-two John Clift from Pwllheli, who died following a road traffic collision on the A499 in Pwllheli a year ago.

Colleagues have also commissioned a bench in his memory.

Huw completes 156-mile desert race

An ultra-runner from Pwllheli has completed the “toughest footrace on Earth” and raised £6,000 for charity.

Huw Williams, 44, managed to run Marathon Des Sables, a six-day, 156-mile slog in the world’s toughest terrain, the Sahara Desert.

With temperatures regularly reaching well over 50° C, uneven sand dunes and rocky outcrops, and freezing cold evenings, the race is renowned as one of the most gruelling challenges a human can undertake.

Running an equivalent of a marathon a day, except Wednesday when he ran two back-to-back, Huw completed his staggering task between 9 and 15 April

Pet cuts open paw on broken bottle

A GLASS-STREWN footpath in Pwllheli has caused injury to pets and is a danger, a concerned resident has warned.

Postman Dave Williams, who has lived on Caernarfon Road for the last eight years, has spoken out about the state of the footpath adjacent to the nearby Bro Cynan flats.

Mr Williams said he had cleared the stretch numerous times by himself but feels it is now time for Gwynedd Council to intervene.
“A lot of youngsters use the footpath to drink and meet up,” Mr Williams told the Cambrian News.
“I’ve not really got a problem with that as it were but I do have an issue with the litter they leave behind.
“There’s always broken bottles along the path and my two-year-old sheepdog Bruno has split his paws open before now.
“It’s not just a problem I have either. I know my neighbour’s dog cut its paws open and the veterinary bills cost them hundreds.
“I’ve even had to pluck broken bottles out of the fields nearby to stop the horses getting hurt – it has become a real issue and maybe something as simple as placing a bin there would help.”

Redwood Avenue win ‘Battle of the Bands’

Congratulations to Pwllheli based band Redwood Avenue on winnning the Good for Audio Entertainment Mcleans Pub Live OMC Battle Of the Bands Final 2016 on Saturday 29th October.

Redwood Avenue came out on top after putting on a high energy performance in a very competitive final at Deeside.

After winning the £1000 prize lead singer Aled Evans said: “Thank you so much to everyone for the support, it has been crazy, we were so nervous and its been so much fun, Redwood Avenue are going to hit the studio and keep pushing. We will have new music to showcase very soon”.

Expect fireworks from these guys. They get better and better at every show!

Shop closure raises fears for high street

CONCERNS have been raised over the sustainability of local businesses after a long-running sports store closed after trading for more than 20 years in Porthmadog and Pwllheli.

The operators of Llyn Sports, which had stores in Pwllheli and Porthmadog, shut down both their sites this week.

A sign on the Pwllheli store reads: “Llyn Sports has sadly closed. We would like to thank all our customers for their support over the 20+ years.”

The owners, Tim and Yvonica Jones, declined to comment on the closure this week, but Cllr Jason Humphreys, believes the cost of business rates could be putting pressure on local businesses, and also a change in shopping patterns by the public is having an effect.

He said: “The changes in shopping patterns over the years have seen the closure of very well-established retailers in Porthmadog, with the loss of Joe Lewis Fishmongers recently being particularly salient.

“This would have been unthinkable a decade or so ago.

“Another factor of course is Gwynedd Council’s policy of trying to get blood out of a stone through car parking fee hikes.

“Christmas amnesties in this area aren’t that brilliant for shops. There needs to be a more flexible and reasonable attitude.

“I’ve looked at the figures and business rates vary wildly from one high street property to the next. There needs to be a wholesale review of rateable values.”
